What if one of the afteraffects of Metaton’s spell is that Cas is now mute? He wouldn’t be able to explain anything to his brothers, or apologize to Dean and Sam. And not only that, but for the first time in his life he is mind-mute as well, and no matter how much he screams inside his head, no one can hear him.

I do think it’d be pretty funny though if the tables turned and now every time Dean walks into a room he’s like “Hello, Cas” and Cas nearly jumps out of his shoes and is like “DON’T DO THAT!” and Dean just gets the biggest kick ever out of sneaking up on Cas.
Castiel is mute, but he is screaming.
He crumbles to the floor, his knees ache - oh, his knees -
and he stares at the sky.
The stars are falling.
Thousand suns crashing down, extinguishing the light and the glory of the sky.
Those suns are his brothers and sisters, he knows. He could hear them cry if he tries hard enough, if he turns his chin up, if he opens his eyes, his mouth, if he makes an effort...
But Castiel is deaf, and he cannot hear.
And Castiel cannot see his siblings falling, cannot see their beauty burning, their wings consuming themselves and leaving a trail of grace and dust. He can only see falling starts scratching the sky.
Because Castiel is blind, and he cannot see.
Castiel weeps. He aches and doubles over the emptiness in his belly, trying to cradle his wound in his hands.
But the fingers are numb, useless, and all they feel is flesh and muscle and bone.
Castiel screams, but the noise that comes out is just the sob of a broken man.
Castiel is dead,
because he is alive.
